How Many Sisters?

You've come to the right place for information about the Finnish trio of singers called How Many Sisters?

Their first CD, "Stolen Moments," was just released.  I heard them at a June 2004 concert in Washington, DC.  But I had a hard time locating any biographical information in English (although most of the CD is sung in English) and an even harder hard time locating the CD in the United States.

About This Site

I hope this site will make it easier for others who like jazz, acappella, and innovative vocal arrangements to appreciate this terrific group and get How Many Sisters? CDs outside Finland.

BTW, I have no financial interest in anything mentioned here.  I even paid full price for the CDs I bought from May Audio!  The only thing I got for free was permission to use the image of the CD cover from the folks at Prophone Records (although I gather that new pressings may be coming from another source -- stay tuned).  And, neither How Many Sisters? nor the label or distributor endorse, approve or support this site.

In this era of timid record producers and a market saturated with countless re-releases of big name out-takes (which would have been better off left un-released IMHO),

I find myself looking to the smaller labels for the innovation and vitality that makes jazz fun.  So what I get out of this is more and better music if I can help you find and support the good groups like How Many Sisters?

About The Trio

Anna-Mari Kähärä's arrangements take risks as only a singer who knows her group can.  But it's not all new stuff.  Together with Mervi Hiltunen and Pirjo Aittomäki they have their own take on standards like It's Only A Paper Moon, Cheek to Cheek, In A Sentimental Mood, A Night In Tunisia (that's a bit off the wall too) and Autumn Leaves.

How Many Sisters? range goes from acappella (that alone is worth the price of admission), includes a tight set with the Kirmo Lintinen Trio, and they easily hold their own with the UMO Jazz orchestra.

Where To Buy In The US

I think you'll like the folks at May Audio.  Click here to link right to their listing for "Stolen Moments" by How Many Sisters?
